AIDemocracy Opportunities

Adopted by UN member states in 2001, the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) aim to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, achieve universal primary education, promote gender equality, reduce child mortality, improve maternal health, combat HIV/AIDS and malaria, ensure environmental sustainability and develop a global partnership for development.

Ten years later, we still have much to do. While significant progress has been made in some areas, about half the world population (just over 3 billion people) currently lives on less than $2.50 a day (Population Reference Bureau). The United Nations will be meeting this September at the Millennium Development Goal Review Summit to discuss their progress. Coinciding with the Review Summit, activists across the nation are standing up against poverty and urging the UN to uphold its commitments. Many are dissatisfied with the slow progress being made towards achieving the MDGs and are taking action by petitioning, talking to their elected representatives, and making noise.

Join the fight to demand more progress meeting the MDGs!

We are looking for a small group of MDG Champions to serve during the upcoming academic year. Champions will:

Attend the Millennium Campus Network Summit in New York this September as part of an AIDemocracy delegation (we'll cover the cost)
Spearhead events about the MDGs back home on their campuses
Selected students will also be paired up with youth activists from Action Aid's global Activista network, to learn about efforts to achieve the MDGs in the Activistas' countries, and coordinate joint activities around global poverty and the efforts that must be made to achieve the MDGs by 2015.
Interested in being an MDG Champion?

To apply, send a letter of interest and an idea for a campus event you would be excited to put together as an MDG Champion to opportunities@aidemocracy.org by next Tuesday August 31. Campus events are a great way to rally students around a cause, whether it's a film screening, panel discussion or public display--feel free to get creative and think big! When outlining your event, keep in mind involving Action Aid's Global Activistas as an added resource as they will be available to participate and assist you by phone or video. For more information on the Activistas, visit their webpage.
