Department: Corporate Programming Internship

The Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) is an independent, nonpartisan membership organization, think tank, and publisher dedicated to being a resource for its members, government officials, business executives, journalists, educators and students, civic and religious leaders, and other interested citizens in order to help them better understand the world and the foreign policy choices facing the United States and other countries. Founded in 1921, CFR carries out its mission by maintaining a diverse membership, with special programs to promote interest and develop expertise in the next generation of foreign policy leaders; convening meetings at its headquarters in New York and in Washington, DC, and other cities where senior government officials, members of Congress, global leaders, and prominent thinkers come together with CFR members to discuss and debate major international issues; supporting a Studies Program that fosters independent research, enabling CFR scholars to produce articles, reports, and books and hold roundtables that analyze foreign policy issues and make concrete policy recommendations; publishing Foreign Affairs, the preeminent journal on international affairs and U.S. foreign policy; sponsoring Independent Task Forces that produce reports with both findings and policy prescriptions on the most important foreign policy topics; and providing up-to-date information and analysis about world events and American foreign policy on its website, cfr.org.
The Corporate Program, the Council's primary point of contact with the private sector, enlists the business community's participation in and support of the Council's activities. Corporate members include nearly 200 U.S. and non-U.S. firms representing a wide range of business sectors, including financial services, law, manufacturing, consulting, technology, media, and others. Each year the program hosts over 70 events in New York and Washington, including a two-day conference.
By providing administrative support for the Corporate Program, the intern will gain exposure to leading global companies and economic and political issues affecting international business while building important business skills.
The responsibilities of the intern will include:
- Providing research on global issues relevant to the business community and identifying potential speakers, with the aim of integrating research into future programming
- Assisting in all facets of event preparation and staffing, including making follow-up phone calls to invitees and staffing events
- Assisting with general administrative duties as required
Qualifications
- Undergraduate preferred or graduate student with a concentration in International Relations and/or Business/Economics
- Experience in a corporate environment preferred; prior administrative experience required
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Strong computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel; Nexis Lexis and Cap IQ would be pluses
- Excellent attention to detail
- Superior telephone etiquette
- Availability to work flexible hours as necessary
The intern will report to the Deputy Director, Corporate Programming. A modest stipend is offered upon completion of the internship.
