FTI’s purpose is to promote fair trials according to internationally-agreed standards of justice. Fair Trials International retains a focus on assisting those facing trial outside their home country, recognizing the particular vulnerability of non-national defendants in criminal proceedings. The organization’s mission is expressed as follows: Fair Trials International works for fair trials according to international standards of justice and defends the rights of those facing charges in a country other than their own.
About FTI
FTI was launched as Fair Trials Abroad by British lawyer Stephen Jakobi OBE in 1994, working initially from home with the aid of volunteers. Since then, the workload has gradually expanded. In 1999, FTA was registered as a British charity (registration no. 1134586) with a board of trustees.
The work of FTI
FTI’s work comprises casework, research, training and capacity building, policy work and campaigning. It is funded by grants from the EU, UK Trusts, individuals, and corporate members:
- · FTI remains strongly rooted in its individual cases. Each year we assist hundreds of people facing trial in a country other than their own.
- · In its research role, FTI carries out studies into the workings of justice on an international basis to produce fact-based evidence to influence policy and procedure.
- · We also coordinate a number of important networks including a Legal Experts Advisory Panel (comprising experienced experts in cross border criminal justice) and a Young Defenders Network (providing training and on-ongoing networking and peer support for emerging human rights defenders from across Europe).
- · FTI uses the evidence from its casework practice to inform policy debates on cross-border criminal justice, domestically and at an EU level. We lobby policy-makers to tackle the root-causes of the injustice facing people subject to criminal proceedings in a foreign country.
- · In its campaigning role, FTI seeks to defend the rights of individuals generally in such areas as discrimination between national and non-national citizens.
