Global Health R&D Advocacy Intern at Research!America

Summary
Research!America is the nation's largest non-profit public education and advocacy alliance working to make research to improve health a higher national priority through education, advocacy and public policy activities. Within this framework, this position focuses on strengthening advocacy for an increased investment in U.S.-funded global health R&D, therefore the organization has a unique domestic focus on funding needs rather than health delivery. We are located in Old Town Alexandria, VA, a 10 minute walk from the King Street Metro stop. This is a paid, four-month, full-time internship with a possibility of an extension. The person in this position would start as soon as possible. Candidates must be available 40 hours per week, 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Internship Description
The intern will report to the Director, Global Health R&D and work closely with the two Program Managers responsible for the organization’s programmatic advocacy efforts for global health R&D. These efforts largely support a strategy designed to build targeted congressional support for U.S.-funded global health R&D.

Responsibilities include:
• Performing background research with an emphasis on the economic impact of global health R&D activities in specific states and congressional districts;
• Gathering and synthesizing data (including but not exclusively economic impact) on the global health R&D aspects of the federal health agencies;
• Assisting in the fact-checking and development of online and print advocacy materials and publications, including fact sheets, newsletter articles, blogs and website content;
• Scheduling, planning and tracking policymaker meetings;
• Conducting, analyzing and summarizing background meeting materials and information as requested;
• Tracking relevant policy issues, including budget and appropriations, legislation and hearings related to U.S. investment in global health R&D;
• Complete and present to the full staff a self-directed project on an advocacy-related global health R&D policy topic relevant to U.S. concerns, and
• Administrative and project coordination support as needed.

Eligibility
Graduate students or recent graduates (undergraduate or graduate school) with a science, public health, political science, public policy or related degree (or degree goal) who seek science or public health policy experience are encouraged to apply.

Candidates should present a strong academic background with excellent oral and written communication skills. A passion for public and global health research as well as a strong desire to study federal policy structures that impact funding and regulation are essential. Candidates must be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite software.

Compensation
Research!America offers a competitive stipend and paid parking or a transportation subsidy (Metro).
