AmeriCares is a nonprofit global health and disaster relief organization which delivers free medications, medical supplies and aid to people in need around the world. Since its founding in 1982, AmeriCares has distributed $10 billion in humanitarian aid. In order to provide aid to people in need, AmeriCares secures high-quality product donations from medical supply manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies, identifies local health care priorities to guide appropriate allocation of our donations, and solicits funding to transport the products to a network of health care partners and institutions serving under-resourced communities.

The Global Medical Assistance Program is run by the Global Partnerships department which oversees the delivery of medicines and supplies to international and local non-profit organizations, hospitals, clinics, ministries of health and other beneficiaries. AmeriCares seeks an intern to assist the Global Partnerships team that manages aid to the Middle East and Africa region.
Interns will provide the regional teams with organizational and administrative support, and will assist with research initiatives and the gathering of facts and statistics on healthcare institutions and global health issues. This position requires a commitment of 15 to 20 hours a week and consistent attendance to ensure that projects are seen to completion.
EXPERIENCE GAINED:
- Helping to directly address developing-country healthcare problems, particularly limitations on access to affordable medications;
- Supporting the safe and effective distribution of medications across the two regions, through various logistical and supply chain models;
- Managing pharmaceutical product donations, including gaining an understanding of various disease states, medication categories, and some of the risks and safeguards relating to international aid distribution.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Help create a comprehensive dataset on beneficiary health care institutions, their capabilities, specialty care services, and patient population. Translate raw facts into narrative descriptions of the beneficiary institutions for use with external audiences;
- Maintain robust records on partners’ priority needs and their usage of medicines through accurate data entry;
- Draft compelling narrative accounts of AmeriCares impact in the field to be used with AmeriCares donors and other stakeholders;
- Help track the distribution of medicines and supplies to each health care institution in the partnership network and analyze distribution data for trends;
- Provide administrative support while staff are out of the office;
- Assist in file organization and other record keeping;
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Current undergraduate student (preferably junior or senior year), graduate student or recent college graduate interested in international humanitarian assistance;
- Political and cultural regional knowledge preferred, but not required;
- Record of academic achievement and seriousness of purpose;
- Strong organization skills; must be detail oriented;
- Excellent Excel skills, proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook required;
- Prior office/administrative experience preferred;
- Self-starter; ability to work independently and meet deadlines;
- Team orientation; balanced focus on personal accountability and team goals;
- Career interest in global health, international development, emergency response, and/or international affairs
