Immigration Staff Attorney at Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem, New York

The Neighborhood Defender Service is a community-based, holistic public defense practice. NDS’s Immigration Services Project is a critical part of our holistic approach to public defense, and ensures our compliance with the Supreme Court mandate in Padilla v. Kentucky that criminal defense attorneys advise their clients of immigration consequences associated with criminal dispositions. The Immigration Services Project: advises NDS’s non-citizen clients regarding the full range of immigration consequences associated with their criminal cases; works with NDS defenders to mitigate the negative immigration consequences of open criminal cases; and provides direct representation to non-citizen clients.

The Immigration Staff Attorney will:
  • Consult with staff attorneys and clients regarding immigration consequences of criminal dispositions;
  • Represent clients in immigration court, in affirmative applications for immigration benefits, and in post-convictions motions in criminal court; and
  • Oversee the immigration services project at NDS.
