This one-year, fixed-term position is funded by an individual donor.
International Advocacy Directors specialize in a particular region of the world, though their brief may also include advocacy on human rights concerns beyond the region. They work as part of a team of advocacy staff who together carry forward the US foreign policy aspects of AI’s human rights agenda. They provide US government strategy advice to, and carry out advocacy in support of, AIUSA’s priority campaigns (in particular, the Individuals at Risk Campaign and AI’s rapid response and crisis response work).
Responsibilities include:
Country human rights expertise and advocacy
Alongside the volunteer Country Specialists who cover countries in the regional brief, serve as an internal specialist on human rights issues as they pertain to the region. Support Country Specialists and other volunteer networks seeking to advance human rights in the region. In all work, support AIUSA membership, diversity and growth goals.

Support for Priority Campaigns
Serve as lead government relations strategist and lobbyist as needed on priority campaigns that involve regional concerns, particularly Rapid and Crisis Response and Individuals at Risk. Participate in cross-functional teams and develop US government advocacy strategies and provide guidance on membership actions as needed.

Building external relationships
Cultivate relationships with US government officials, international officials and actors, think tanks, experts, and other non-governmental organizations on the local and national level. Coordinate with other government relations-focused staff to develop and execute strategies to influence the US government’s policies on the region and on issues that impact the region. Collaborate with AIUSA’s Development staff to cultivate potential donors.

Serve as an AIUSA spokesperson on human rights issues as they pertain to AI’s work on the region; communicate with and educate AIUSA members; collaborate with coalition partners and other NGOs.
In close consultation with Communications staff, give interviews, press conferences and briefings, write for publication and craft relevant and timely messages for press releases. Write blogs.

Contributing to AIUSA and international strategy development and policy consultation
Contribute expertise on regional human rights issues of concern to Amnesty in policy discussions within the unit and department; participate in the annual International Strategy Forum and other meetings designed to plan and implement AIUSA’s work on the region. Maintain regular communications with the relevant IS researchers and IGO staff.

Qualifications:
MA, PhD or JD in relevant field is useful with 4-6 years of directly related work experience preferred. US government advocacy experience, particularly relating to human rights and foreign policy, familiarity with Middle East and North African countries, and human rights expertise are essential. Experience working with volunteers in a grassroots context highly desirable. Knowledge of one or more languages in the region is preferred.
