International Climate Change Legal Intern at the Environmental Defense Fund


Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate & Air Program seeks a legal intern in our Washington, D.C. office to assist the International Climate team with international climate policy research and development.

Responsibilities

The International Climate Legal Intern will work with EDF's international climate attorneys to:
  • Research and help develop new market-based mechanisms for an international climate treaty
  • Investigate other legal questions arising in the UNFCCC negotiations, such as how to address indigenous peoples' rights and questions of land tenure in the development of proposals to compensate tropical forest nations for avoided deforestation
  • Investigate legal questions arising in the development of national climate policy regimes in key countries where EDF has a presence or is working with local partners
  • Help the international climate team prepare for upcoming UN climate negotiations and other climate-relevant negotiations and international conferences (e.g., Rio+20)
  • Research other issues, such as the following:
    • The legal architecture of a new UN climate agreement
    • The legal issues associated with the Cancun Agreements trade questions that arise in environmental & climate policy areas
    • The legal issues associated with governance of geoengineering experimentation

Qualifications

  • Law student with interest and/or experience in environmental advocacy
  • Highly proficient in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint and other software applications
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to interface well with all programs/departments in the organization and to represent the Climate and Air team in a highly professional manner
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be well organized, motivated, and detail-oriented
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work in a team setting or independently when projects are due Demonstrate initiative and problem solving skills
  • Experience living and/or working abroad is preferred

Hours/Term

This is a 10-week internship with a preferred start date of mid-May or mid-June.

Compensation

UNPAID position; academic credit may be available.
