JOB DESCRIPTION
Purpose
To contribute to the coverage of country reviews for the upcoming November session of the Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). The five countries under review are Argentina, Cameroon, Estonia, Israel and Turkmenistan. The Reporting Intern will work remotely and must have continued computer access.
About us
The ESCR forum is an international NGO established with the overarching aim of improving the protection of economic, social and cultural rights. We believe this can be achieved by enabling greater civil society engagement with the Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR) and its Committee.
The organisation aims to provide a news, information and training service to national partners, as well as facilitate greater cooperation - both between NGOs and between NGOs and the Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
We operate to provide the foundation blocks for civil society empowerment - information and discussion. We provide information to encourage debate with other NGOs, States and the Committee, for the further realisation of the rights set out in the Covenant.
Main duties and responsibilities
The Reporting Intern will be required to produce a report on one country under review by the Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, and provide all necessary related news and lobbying coverage.
Prior to the session, the reporting intern will:
1. Conduct background research and preparation on his/her designated country i.e. review State reports, core documents and supplementary reports.
2. Assist the Director in maintaining ESCR Forum's social media pages to provide continuous updates and ensure sustained interest in his/her designated country.
3. Assist the Director in developing dissemination strategies for the country reports.
During the session, the reporting intern will:
4. Observe and monitor the review of his/her designated country.
5. Record and assess all general comments made on his/her designated country.
6. Produce regular new updates on the session for the ESCR Forum website and other social media pages.
After the session, the reporting intern will:
7. Consider the concluding observations of the Committee.
8. Produce a thorough and accurate report on his/her designated country.
9. Circulate the country report to the appropriate NGOs.
10. Assist the Director in developing suitable follow-up strategies for national NGOs.
General
The Reporting Intern will contribute as part of the team to other country reports should it be necessary and will undertake any other responsibilities when requested, which are commensurate with this role.
Note: We regret that we are unable to provide interns with a salary as yet, but the internship programme has been designed to provide crucial first-hand experience of lobbying and reporting on a specific country.
PERSON SPECIFICATION
Qualifications
1. Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a relevant field (human rights, international law/relations, politics, journalism) or a demonstrated interest in human rights and/or development.
Knowledge and Experience
2. Good knowledge of national or international human rights law.
3. Experience of working with online social media such as Twitter.
4. Good knowledge of MS Office systems.
Skills and Abilities
5. Excellent written skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
6. Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to plan and prioritise work.
7. Able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Desirable
8. Background knowledge on UN human rights mechanisms.
9. Some prior experience of reporting work.
10. Any relevant language skills.
