The organization owes its existence in large part to the effort to combat uninformed discrimination against Sikh Americans after September 11, 2001. The Coalition provides direct legal services to Sikh victims of hate crimes, employment discrimination, public accommodation discrimination, profiling, and other forms of discrimination. It has an active caseload of civil rights matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States.
