Global Fellow at the Heartland Alliance

THE ORGANIZATION
Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights is the largest service-based human rights organization in the United States, with over 1,000 employees in Chicago and around the world. Heartland Alliance is currently implementing programs in 20 countries in Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and has been present in Haiti since January 19, 2010; one week after the devastating earthquake hit the country.
THE POSITION
Location: Port-au-Prince, Haiti
Duration: 6 months - 1 year
Heartland Alliance is looking for a Global Fellow to support its program combating domestic child slavery.
Program Background:
Confronting Restavek Exploitation through Assistance, Training, and Education (CREATE), is an 18-monthproject to combat Haiti’s longstanding practice of domestic child slavery that officially began on the one-year anniversary of the earthquake, on January 12, 2011. Local organizations have developed effective models for protecting restavek children and uprooting acceptance of the restavek system, but are limited by a lack of training, coordination, and access to funding. Heartland Alliance currently works with Organizasyon Jen Fanm en Aksyon (OJFA), and Timoun Kap Teke Chans (TIMKATEC), to build their organizational capacity and advance their coordination with Government of Haiti (GoH) child protection authorities. Upon its completion, CREATE will have undermined the attitudes that create restavek supply and demand and led to more comprehensive services for a greater number of restavek children.
In Addition to this project, the supported volunteer will be expected to support other Heartland Alliance programing including the Participatory Leadership and Action for Youth and Trafficking Prevention Program (PLAY). Play is a community led initiative to combat child trafficking, and build social capital through community mobilization, civil society coordination, recreational activity programming for children and youth, and community training.
Responsibilities:
The Global Fellow will work with CREATE on a variety of capacity building tasks, including:

- Reporting on OJFA’s and TIMKATEC’s activities in order to measure the outcome of organizational restructuring
- Improving OJFA’s and TIMKATEC’s fundraising capacity by researching potential funding opportunities, drafting grant proposals and interfacing with donors
