Internship at Atlas: DIY

Atlas: DIY, a cooperative empowerment center for immigrant youth and their allies, seeks a part-time legal intern and/or law graduate for the upcoming spring semester. As a new organization opening in January of 2012, Atlas provides an exciting opportunity for the right applicant to not only gain a further understanding of immigration laws in our country, but also to become involved with an organization in its beginning and is sure to provide an exciting, challenging, and rewarding experience.

Opening on January 28th 2012 and every Sunday and Monday thereafter, Atlas seeks to provide a safe space for immigrant youth where they can access services and be full participating members of Atlas’ society. Atlas welcomes all youth, regardless of their immigration status, to receive professional services from the legal, mental wellness, educational and recreational realms. As members of Atlas, youth work within a Time Bank framework, providing services to their community in exchange for what they need. For more information about the organization and our philosophy, please visit www.findingatlas.wordpress.com

The intern’s responsibilities will include providing immigration consultations (with supervision) to Atlas members, co-facilitation of the Immigrant Youth Peer Educator Program, as well as Know Your Rights legal workshops to immigrant communities throughout NYC. Applicants must be bilingual and/or bicultural and it is preferred that you have some experience with immigration law.

The chosen intern(s) will be supervised directly by Atlas’ co-founder, Lauren A. Burke, Esq, an immigration attorney at the New York Asian Women’s Center, and who was previously a Skadden Fellow at The Door Legal Services Center.
