ABA International Law Internship

About the Section:
The Section of International Law has been the leader in the development of policy in the international arena and strives to promote the rule of law and the education of international law practitioners. It is the only ABA entity that focuses on the full range of international legal issues and is involved in a wide variety of substantive legal activities. Currently, the Section has over 25,000 members worldwide. The objective of the Section of International Law is to promote interest, activity and research in international and comparative law, and to implement Goal IV of the Association, “to promote the rule of law in the world.” The Section engages in proactive and regular member services activity involving marketing and promotional work in the areas of membership, seminars, events, and technology.

About the Section’s International Projects:
The Section undertook its first overseas project in 1986 and, in the more than twenty-five years since, the Section has implemented numerous short- and long-term legal capacity-building projects around the world. The Section's Rule of Law Officer oversees the Section's activities in coordination with Section staff. Section members are encouraged to support and participate in the Section's exciting rule of law initiatives which include the International Legal Exchange Program (ILEX). Through ILEX, the Section arranges briefing trips throughout the world, offers legal assistance and training for foreign lawyers and other professionals, and facilitates entry into the U.S. by foreign attorneys who have been offered training by U.S. law firms.

The ABA-UNDP International Legal Resource Center "ILRC" is the long-standing flagship international project of the Section of International Law. Founded in 1999, the Center is based upon the common commitment of the American Bar Association (ABA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to support and promote good governance and the rule of law around the world. The mission of the ILRC is to provide a legal resource capability to serve UNDP global governance programs and projects supporting legal reform and democratic institution building. Serving as a key liaison between UNDP and the international legal community, the ILRC has provided on-demand research, desktop legislative assessments, and recommendations of legal experts to assist UNDP and national governments in drafting laws, building fundamental institutions, developing the legal profession, and training national officials.

The Section has a variety of Task Forces and Special Projects which are created to deal with specific, current international legal issues. Task Forces produce programming, listserve communications and discussions, ABA policy recommendations, and publications and often collaborate with other bar associations or ABA entities in their work. Some of the current, active Task Forces include the International Models Project on Women’s Rights Task Force (IMPOWR) and Task Force on Financial Engineering for Economic Development (FEED).
