Dr. Puran Singh Bajwa Legal Fellowship at the Sikh Coalition

About Sikh CoalitionThe Sikh Coalition is a community based organization that defends civil rights and civil liberties in the United States, educates the broader community about Sikhs, and fosters civic engagement amongst Sikh Americans. The organization owes its existence in large part to the effort to combat uninformed discrimination against Sikh Americans after September 11, 2001. The Coalition provides direct legal services to Sikh victims of hate crimes, employment discrimination, public accommodation discrimination, profiling, and other forms of discrimination. It has an active caseload of civil rights matters in federal and state courts throughout the United States.
About the InternshipThe Sikh Coalition is accepting applications from law school students and law school graduates for Summer 2011 legal fellowships in our New York City office (located in the Financial District and easily accessible by public transportation). All summer legal fellows are funded by the Dr. Puran Singh Bajwa Legal Fellowship Fund.
Qualified legal fellows should have a passion for social justice and civil rights, a strong work ethic, and excellent legal research, writing, and analytic skills.
Legal interns will receive hands on experience:
• Conducting legal research
• Writing research memorandum
• Drafting legal briefs
• Interviewing clients or witnesses
• Assisting with litigation and casework
Accepted Dr. Puran Singh Bajwa Summer fellows are required to work a minimum of 40 hours per week for 10 weeks during the summer. Accepted summer fellows will receive a $1,000 stipend. Fellows will make a difference in the lives of people whose civil rights have been violated, while gaining substantive legal experience!
