Justice Program Intern at the International Institute for Justice and Development


The Justice Program Support internship offers an excellent opportunity for students looking to obtain additional experience in international NGOs and to learn more about the administration, partnership or coalition building/management, and maintenance and management of justice and democracy assistance projects. Interns will work on a range of activities including international justice, regulatory and judicial reform, democracy and international issues.
RESPONSIBILITIES: 
• Assist in monitoring and reporting on key events on international justice and prepare summaries of issues including major news stories, status of relevant legislation for the IIJD newsletter. 
• Participate in the research of legal documents, legislations, and institutional practices and procedures needed in assessing countries’ justice systems and enter the toolkit data in a database
• Assist in applying indicators and parameters necessary in order to assess national justice systems institutions (judiciary, police force, prison system, alternative dispute resolutions); to identify characteristics necessary for a healthy and efficient justice system, such as transparency, accountability, impartiality, efficiency, accessibility, predictability and reliability; and to determine to what extent national justice systems possess these characteristics. 
• Assist in developing the National Justice System Index, in which each country is rated based on the indicators in the Toolkit.
• Research the justice systems institutions (judiciary, police force, prison system, alternative dispute resolutions) of specific countries
• Assist in the preparation of public opinion surveys for assessing the state of justice within African countries
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: 
• Bachelor’s degree or enrolled in current undergraduate or graduate program. Law Student preferable, but not a requirement. 
• At least one year of office experience or equivalent experience. 
• Demonstrated interest in international justice, democracy and rule of law issues (with a focus in Africa).
• Proficiency using Microsoft Office suite.
• Proficiency in Internet and Library Research
• Ability to read, write and speak English as well as proficiency in at least one international language.

This internship is unpaid. All applicants must have a valid visa or work papers that allow them to legally work in the United States; IIJD, Inc does not sponsor visas for interns or volunteers. Position opens until filled. So please send in your application ASAP.
