2011 Summer Executive Policy and Procedures Intern at Women for Women International

Location: Washington, DC

Founded in 1993, Women for Women International (WfWI) is dedicated to providing women survivors of war with the tools and resources to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency, thereby promoting viable civil societies. WfWI currently works in eight countries: Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Rwanda and Sudan. During the last 17 years, WfWI has transformed the lives of more than 299,000 socially-excluded women and distributed over $94 million in direct aid and microcredit loans, benefiting more than 1.6 million family and community members in the process. In 2010, over 61,881 women in all eight countries received program services, with more than 23,000 sponsors from 56 countries across the world. WfWI has over 600 employees worldwide, and each of our country offices are fully staffed by women and men from the local community.
 
Women for Women International’s Washington office seeks an Executive Policy and Procedures intern for a minimum of 10 weeks.

Project Description:
The Policy and Procedures Intern will support a variety of short- and long-term research and policy creation and analysis activities under the direction of Women for Women International’s Executive Policy and Procedures Manager in the Executive Office. We have one, unpaid internship available during the summer term. Academic credit is available for this internship experience.
 
DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support the communication and implementation of Women for Women International’s policy and authority framework, approved by the Global Leadership Team 
  • Support research and development of new network-wide policies according to the priorities set forth by the Global Leadership Team 
  • Accumulate all policy manuals, confirm version with supervising manager, upload to Women for Women Internationals intranet
  • Chart content of manuals across affiliates and departments
  • Support the creation of policy, procedures and process mapping for missing or incomplete policy areas; Integrate input into final policy proposals or core policy manuals.
  • Assist in the creation of best practice tools/templates
  • Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS and SKILLS:
  • Expected weekly commitment: 25 hours
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Demonstrated interviewing, writing, and researching skills. 
  • Ability to write concise description of programs and policy issues. 
  • Superior research skills including the ability to conduct searches from secondary resources and information using internet search engines. 
  • Strong computer skills, including Excel and database management plus experience creating high-quality charts, tables and graphs. 
  • Ability to balance multiple deadlines and complete tasks assigned on short but reasonable notice.
  • Ability to work independently, to take initiative, and exercise reasonable judgment. 
  • A commitment to Women for Women International's mission and vision. 
  • Experience with process mapping/MS Visio a plus.

Compensation:
Internships available at Women for Women International (WfWi) are currently unpaid positions. Academic credit is available for this internship experience.
