POSITION: Program Officer, Public and Leadership Programs
DEPARTMENT: Programs and Studies
REPORTS TO: Executive Director, Public and Leadership Programs
SUMMARY
The primary responsibility of the Program Officer is to work with the Public and Leadership Programs team to develop and manage the programs and meetings that serve the Council’s general membership, public constituencies, and leadership groups in Chicago. These programs include breakfast briefings, lunchtime presentations, evening talks, and private meetings with visiting experts, political figures, authors, and scholars on a wide range of global issues.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Help develop, manage, implement, and build audience for the Chicago Council Public and Leadership programs each year
• Identify and recruit key domestic and international leaders in government, foreign policy, business, NGOs, academia, and the media for timely, policy-rich programs
• Produce and write program announcements and other materials for the Council’s web site and programs
• Help build strategic partnerships to create and execute innovative, well-attended public and leadership programs on a wide range of issues for a variety of constituencies in Chicago
• Develop, manage, and implement small-group, discussion-oriented events with experts, policymakers, and diplomats for members of the Council’s leadership groups, the Board of Directors, Chairman’s, Directors’, and President’s Circles
• Provide support at Council events, requiring some evening and early morning hours
• Coordinate closely with other Chicago Council staff members on program-related topics
• Occasionally assist at the front desk to relieve the Receptionist/Registration Assistant in meeting/greeting Council constituents and handling incoming calls
• Co-supervise department interns
• Perform other projects as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
• Advanced degree with a focus on international affairs or 3-5 years equivalent experience
• Excellent knowledge of and experience with global issues; expertise in a specific geographic or topical area preferred; international work and/or study experience suggested
• Experience developing multi-faceted, high-profile, events-driven international affairs programs or other relevant experience, including the ability to identify and recruit timely and relevant topics and speakers
• Excellent organizational and time-management skills, as well as professional maturity reflecting a sophisticated understanding of the political, economic, and civic communities in the Chicago area, 
plus the ability to manage simultaneous diverse programs on varying topics with minimal supervision
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and professionally in a creative, fast-paced, intellectual team environment
• Superior verbal and written communication skills
