Program Associate at the Center on Immigration and Justice (Vera Institute)

The Vera Institute of Justice, founded in 1961, is an independent, non-partisan, nonprofit organization that combines expertise in research, technical assistance, and demonstration projects to assist leaders in government and civil society, examine justice policy and practice, and improve the systems people rely on for justice and safety. Vera has offices in New York City, Washington, DC, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, and its projects and reform initiatives, typically conducted in partnership with local, state, or national officials, are located across the United States and around the world.

Vera seeks a program associate to work primarily on the Unaccompanied Children Program of Vera’s Center on Immigration and Justice. Since 2005, Vera, on behalf of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, has overseen a national network that provides legal information and pro bono legal representation to detained children facing immigration removal proceedings. As part of this program, Vera subcontracts with 18 legal service providers and other nonprofit organizations around the country. Vera not only oversees these subcontracts through site visit monitoring and performance measurement activities, but also actively provides technical assistance to the subcontractors through a national conference, peer-to-peer training programs, conference calls and webinars, a project website, and practice advisories on various legal topics related to representing and assisting unaccompanied children in the immigration system. The program associate would participate in these technical assistance activities and assist with other program management tasks.

Responsibilities
The program associate’s duties may include the following:
• Review subcontractor data to inform program development and management, and to assist in the preparation of reports to government partners;
• Assist with planning of national and/or regional training conferences, conference calls, on-line discussions, and phone consultations;
• Develop and coordinate development of program materials;
• Develop and maintain relationships with project partners;
• Identify promising practices among legal service subcontractors and devise ways to disseminate information about such practices to encourage implementation elsewhere;
• Thoughtfully brainstorm solutions for challenges experienced by legal service subcontractors; and
• Occasionally participate in site visits of programs.

Qualifications
Candidates must possess the following:
• A graduate degree, preferably a J.D.;
• At least one year of work or field experience in a legal services, government, or policy-related position;
• Demonstrated knowledge of immigration, criminal justice, or other justice areas;
• Fluent or proficient (speaking, reading, and writing) in Spanish;
• Strong writing, research, and communication skills;
• Strong multi-tasking abilities and organizational skills;
• Excel, PowerPoint, and other computer skills;
• Ability to work collaboratively on a team and take direction from senior program staff;
• Ability to take initiative on projects and work independently;
• Commitment to a collegial workplace;
• Experience representing detained immigrants is a plus; and
• Willingness to occasionally travel outside of New York City.

Salary
Low 50’s, based on experience, with excellent benefits.
