The Asian Pacific American Legal Resource Center (APALRC) is the legal advocate for justice for the Asian American community of the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. The APALRC's mission is to address the individual legal needs of low-income and limited-English proficient Asian Americans and to advocate for broad-based systemic change on legal and civil rights issues impacting Asian Americans.
The APALRC seeks to hire a full-time Program Coordinator/Staff Attorney for its D.C. office. This is a grant-funded position. The primary duties of this individual include supervising volunteers for our area-wide help line, implementing the Crime Victim Assistance Partnership and overseeing the Legal Interpreter Project. The position involves supervising legal work, conducting community outreach and legal education, managing case database and administering grants. The APALRC has a small and vibrant staff. We are looking for an additional team member who is committed to public interest law and is excited about working with and mentoring volunteers.
Principal Responsibilities:
• Assist with recruitment, training, coordination and supervision of volunteers staffing the APALRC’s Legal Helpline;
• Manage communications with individuals seeking legal assistance from the APALRC, including conducting intake interviews with limited-English proficient individuals;
• Coordinate as appropriate on cases with APALRC legal staff
• Manage client/case database and assist with program evaluation and grant application and reporting ;
• Implement the Crime Victims Assistance Partnership through community outreach and legal assistance to crime victims in applying for crime victims assistance benefits, and provide other case management support to victims of crime;
• Manage and coordinate interpretation and translation assignments through the APALRC’s Legal Interpreter Project, including recruitment, training and supervision of interpreters;
• Conduct community outreach and legal education to the Asian American community in the D.C. metropolitan area.

Qualifications:
• Undergraduate degree or equivalent experience required, attorney with 0-2 years experience strongly preferred
• Interest and experience in public interest and/or poverty law strongly preferred
• Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
• Ability to multi-task, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Creative problem solving related to own work and as part of APALRC staff team.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively as well as independently, and to build effective working relationships with other staff, volunteers and organizational partners/allies.
• Prior experience in the legal field, working with the Asian Pacific American community and/or immigrant issues a plus.
• Experience in database management and other office technology helpful.
• Fluency or a high level of proficiency in Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese or another Asian language strongly preferred.
