Internship at the Joint Inspection Unit of the United Nations System


Location: Geneva, Switzerland
Preferred duration: 6 months (minimum: 3 months)
Remuneration: Unpaid
The JIU is currently accepting internship applications for period of August 2011 – July 2012. Topic areas for which interns are being sought are outlined below:
1) Evaluation and oversight
2) Human Resources Management (including Labor Relations)
3) Administration and Finance
4) Accountability frameworks
5) Public Administration (including Strategic Planning)
6) Information and Communication Technology 
7) Sustainable Development
General internship requirements:
- Candidates must be enrolled in a graduate or post-graduate program at the time of commencing their internship. 
- Proven research skills including familiarity with web-based research
- Good writing skills in English; knowledge of other official UN languages is an asset.
Description of internship duties:
Candidates to an Internship at the Joint Inspection Unit will undertake duties as those expected from a Research Assistant, supporting the work of a team for a specific report, under the supervision of an Evaluation and Inspection Officer, to assist the Inspector(s) in the research work related to on-going projects of the annual work programme. Interns can also be involved in supporting the work to prepare future work programmes and other internal tasks of the Unit.
The intern will be assigned to different tasks depending on the status of implementation of the annual work programme of the unit. Normally, s/he will be assigned to be research assistant for one or two of the JIU reviews, under direct the supervision of an Evaluation and Inspection Officer. As research assistant, s/he will contribute to the research (desk review, review of basic documentation) and drafting work to support the Review prepared by one or more Inspectors of the Unit. This entails analysis of key issues for the review, including comparative analysis of the work of the 25 participating organizations in this area, preparation of interview questionnaires, analysis of survey results, participation in interviews and write-up of interviews, preparation of analytical charts, graphs, etc.
The intern can also be tasked with preparing management assessments of select JIU organizations. This entails research of the organization involved, analyzing recent organizational developments in the area of management and administration.
If joining the Unit between the period of October – end of January, s/he may also be assigned to be part of the team preparing the Winter Session of the Inspectors and providing support to the preliminary work leading to the definition of their Annual Programme of Work. This process includes task such as: research and validation of proposals, liaison with Participating Organizations and other coordinating and oversight bodies of the System, and support to the work of the coordinator of the Programme of Work.
The intern may also be involved in reviewing the follow-up information provided by participating organizations regarding the status of implementation of JIU reports. This requires analysis of the responses provided, trend development, statistical analysis and review of supportive secondary information.
About the JIU
As the only independent external oversight body of the United Nations system mandated to conduct evaluations, inspections and investigations system-wide, the Unit aims at: 
- Assisting the legislative organs of the participating organizations in meeting their governance responsibilities in respect of their oversight function concerning management by the secretariats of human, financial and other resources;
- Helping improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the respective secretariats in achieving the legislative mandates and the mission objectives established for the organizations;
- Promoting greater coordination between the organizations of the United Nations System;
- Identifying best practices, propose benchmarks and facilitate information-sharing throughout the system.
