Summer 2011 Internship Program
Vera runs an annual summer internship program for undergraduate, graduate, and law school students. Interns typically work full time in one of Vera’s departments or centers and programs; some part-time positions may be available. In addition to working on individual assignments, all interns participate in events organized by the internship coordinator. For example, last summer interns visited Sing Sing Correctional Facility, lunched with executive-level management, and visited Vera demonstration projects.
Legal Department Interns (1)
Vera’s Legal Department provides comprehensive legal advice and assistance to the managers of Vera's administrative and substantive departments.
Responsibilities: The Legal Department is seeking an intellectually agile and hard-working law student with a discerning judgment and strong interest in nonprofit organizations and operations. An interest in the substantive areas in which Vera works (including criminal justice, juvenile justice and immigration), and in employment law and policy, is a plus. The intern, who will work during the Summer of 2011, will work with the General Counsel and Assistant General Counsel. Tasks may include legal research and writing, policy review and assistance with human resources and other policy creation, and helping to provide strategic advice and counsel to all facets of the organization. The intern will participate in Legal Department and Institute-wide meetings, as well as meetings about many Vera projects, such that all interns will have been exposed to many different aspects of Vera's work.
Qualifications: Candidates must be law students who are creative thinkers and are able to work independently and to simultaneously manage several tasks. Strong writing, oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills are a must. While some assignments will consist of traditional legal research, candidates should expect to be exposed to a wide array of tasks.
