Tahirih is currently seeking to hire an Immigration Staff Attorney for our Houston office. The position has overall responsibility for providing direct representation to clients, training and mentoring pro bono attorneys and educating the community. The ideal candidate will have three to five years’ legal experience in the area of immigration law and will have worked with female victims of violence from multi-cultural backgrounds. Additionally, the candidate will be highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, empathetic, and be committed to the promotion of justice for women and girls, and to the foundational values of Tahirih.
Primary responsibilities will include:
General
- Respond to service seekers and conduct intake interviews
- Provide legal representation in immigration matters before the Dept of Homeland Security, Immigration Courts, BIA, and state and federal courts
- Recruit, train and mentor pro bono attorneys who co-counsel Tahirih cases
- Conduct trainings and outreach activities
- Attend coalition meetings and network with like-minded organizations
- Periodically write articles and training materials for publication, in consultation with the Houston Director
- Supervise one paralegal, legal externs, and occasional volunteers
- Support Tahirih’s public policy advocacy by providing compelling case stories, reviewing potential amicus cases, contributing ideas for advocacy, and handling media interviews
Fundraising and Communications
- Contribute to the development of grant proposals and reports
- Occasionally attend meetings with potential funders
- Provide client stories and draft articles for periodic Tahirih publications and newsletters
- Support periodic fundraising campaigns (e.g. attorney giving campaign, special events, etc.)
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- At least 3 years of immigration law, including asylum, VAWA, T & U visa cases, and Special Immigrant Juvenile cases
- Admission to the State Bar of Texas
- Experience working with female survivors of trauma and those from diverse cultural backgrounds
- Ability to think strategically as well as tactically
- Excellent legal analysis, written, and oral communications skills
- Ability to multitask and manage stress well in a fast-paced environment with people from diverse cultural backgrounds and personalities
- Meticulous organizational habits with an ability to manage large amounts of information, establish priorities, and meet deadlines
- Extremely responsible, self-motivated, and focused
- Foreign language skills
Annual salary and benefits: Annual salary is $47,000-$51,500 depending on experience. Generous benefits including: 15 days of paid accrued vacation during the first year (20 days of vacation after the first year), additional week vacation between Christmas and New Years, 403(b), flex-spending account, sick and parental leave, fully-paid health and dental insurance coverage, in-house training programs, and staff enrichment retreats.
