Center for Reproductive Rights International Program in New York City

The Center for Reproductive Rights (the Center) is a non-profit legal advocacy organization dedicated to advancing reproductive freedom as a fundamental right that all governments are legally obligated to protect, respect, and fulfill. The Center’s U.S., International and Government Relations programs engage in litigation, policy analysis, legal research, and public education seeking to achieve women’s equality in society and ensure that all women have access to appropriate and freely chosen reproductive health services.

The Center for Reproductive Rights will be hiring a total of 8 legal interns for the New York office and 1 or 2 legal interns for the DC office for the summer of 2011: 4 interns will be placed in the U.S. Legal Program and 4 interns will be placed in the International Legal Program and 1 or 2 interns will be placed in our Government Relations Program (DC). Applicants must indicate which program they are applying for; however if they have a strong interest in all programs, they are welcome to apply to each of them. This summer, each intern in the USLP and the ILP will have an opportunity to work on a joint USLP/ILP project.

Qualifications & Responsibilities:
Law students are expected to have strong legal research and writing skills and a demonstrated interest in gender/women’s issues and reproductive rights. 2L, 3L and LL.M. students with prior knowledge of human rights law are strongly encouraged to apply.

United States Legal Program (4 positions-NYC): During the past 20 years, CRR attorneys have been counsel in virtually every major U.S. Supreme Court case about reproductive rights. The United States Legal Program represents women, physicians and reproductive health care facilities throughout the country in litigation designed to preserve and improve access to a full range of reproductive health services, including abortion, contraception and reproductive technologies. In addition to the U.S. Legal Program’s ground-breaking litigation, we engage in strategic legislative advocacy at the federal and state level and we use domestically the human rights strategies that CRR has pioneered internationally. The Summer Intern program is ten weeks long. Applicants are encouraged to obtain funding or credits from law schools or other sources; limited funding may be available from the Center.

International Legal Program (4 positions-NYC): The International Legal Program collaborates with women’s rights organizations and advocates around the world to promote and defend internationally recognized reproductive rights through a range of legal strategies and global initiatives. The Center has programs in Africa, Asia, East Central Europe, and Latin America and the Caribbean. Our activities include: litigation to enforce reproductive rights norms in national, regional and international fora; developing advocacy tools and training materials to build the capacity and support the work of reproductive rights lawyers worldwide; monitoring and documenting violations of reproductive rights; and analyzing legal and policy developments relating to reproductive rights. The Summer Intern program is ten weeks long. Applicants are encouraged to obtain funding or credits from law schools or other sources; limited funding may be available from the Center.

Government Relations Program (1 - 2 positions-DC): The Washington, DC office represents the Center’s views on Capitol Hill, in the State Department, and before executive branch agencies. The Center is committed to advocating boldly for the centrality of abortion rights and women’s access to abortion services in the pro-choice agenda, and our human rights mandate and expertise in constitutional, comparative and international law give the Center a unique policy perspective. Interns in the Government Relations Program will monitor and respond to legislative and other political developments, including hearings, markups and other events; draft materials, including bill analysis, fact sheets, legislative drafting and legal memoranda, for us in lobbying activities and other outreach; and prepare internal and external updates, blog posts, op-eds and other written analyses. The Summer Intern program is ten weeks long. Applicants are encouraged to obtain funding or credits from law schools or other sources; limited funding may be available from the Center.
