Internship at UNIAP Bangkok Headquarters

Summer legal interns (May-August 2011): Currently enrolled law students are invited to apply for a position on the summer legal team, a small team of outstanding law students focusing on human rights, trafficking, and legal aid to underserved populations.
The legal intern team will be based in the UNIAP Bangkok headquarters, and will work both in headquarters and in the field to:
• Gain experience, exposure, and training on how human counter-trafficking is done in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, as a part of UNIAP’s initiative to network and build the capacity of Asian and international young professionals;
• Provide support to UNIAP headquarters and country office staff on criminal justice activities, including capacity building, technical support to workshops and other programs, and in general helping GMS countries advance toward their target of improving prosecution of trafficking under their existing national legal frameworks;
• Research and draft UNIAP SIREN reports, working with UNIAP headquarters and country office staff and partners to analyze each country’s criminal and civil laws relating to labor trafficking and exploitation, and investigating on the ground how these laws are (or are not) applied in practice to protect migrants from exploitation and human rights abuse; and
• Assist with providing legal advice and direct support for UNIAP’s Support to Underserved Victim Populations initiative, helping UNIAP and partners to design appropriate legal aid delivery for underserved victim populations.
To apply for a position on the UNIAP summer legal intern team, please send an application package consisting of a curriculum vita and a cover letter discussing:
• Your qualifications and experience on the issue of human trafficking,
• Your qualifications and experience in the Greater Mekong Sub-region, including language skills,
• What motivates you to apply for a position on the UNIAP summer legal intern team, and
• Three references, including their email addresses.
Please note that these internships are not funded, and internships are only open to students who are currently registered at an accredited university. Please email legal intern application packages to Melinda Sullivan (melinda.kate.sullivan@undp.org) by Friday, January 28, 2011.
