Program Assistant - Southeast Asia at Freedom House in Washington D.C.

Through research, effective advocacy, and programs directly supporting frontline activists, Freedom House supports the spread of freedom and democracy throughout the world. Freedom House has been a leader in identifying threats to freedom through its highly regarded analytic reports, including Freedom in the World. Itsdiverse programs have supported the work of civic activists and human rights defenders in over 40 countries. Advocacy and outreach are aimed at encouraging democratic governments, including the United States, to adopt and implement policies that effectively advance human rights and democracy at home and abroad. Freedom House’s annual budget is $18 million, with 13 field offices, and two U.S. offices. 
 
The Southeast Asia Program is seeking a full-time Program Assistant to support ongoing activities in the region. This is a Washington, DC-based position. The program focuses on human rights advocacy, international religious freedom, and good governance issues. Field staff, located in Bangkok, Thailand and Jakarta, Indonesia, work closely with a team of DC-based program staff to develop culturally appropriate programming initiatives that have the strong support of local stakeholders.
 
BASIC FUNCTIONS:
Under the direction of the Senior Program Manager – Southeast Asia and working in close collaboration with the Program Officer – SEA, the Program Assistant will provide day-to-day project administration support to field staff in the region. Duties will include: promoting and reporting on Southeast Asia programs; maintaining databases; supporting the regional field offices; providing research and administrative assistance; assisting in financial management responsibilities; and other administrative duties as needed.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
Ideal candidates will possess the following education, experience, and abilities:
  • 1-3 years experience in project management
  • Highly organized and strong attention to detail; ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-task, and prioritize effectively
  • Excellent writing/verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal/inter-cultural communication skills and the ability to build and cultivate strong partnerships
  • Understanding of USAID compliance and funding mechanisms highly desirable
  • Experience living/working in Southeast Asia or extensive travel to the region; specific experience in Cambodia and Khmer language skills highly desirable; other Southeast Asian languages an asset
  • Discretion, flexibility, the ability to deal with and negotiate conflict effectively, and a sense of humor.
  • Bachelor’s degree with a focus on international relations, Southeast Asia/Asian studies,development policy, political science, or related field;
  • Human rights advocacy experience highly desirable
