The Staff Attorney is an integral part of the Immigration Intervention Project, a legal services project that represents over 1,000 victims of domestic violence each year in immigration matters. Representation is provided in-house, as well as through the mentoring of volunteer attorneys. In addition, through trainings and participating in the immigration and domestic violence advocacy communities of New York, the Staff Attorney educates the public, the social service and law enforcement communities, and politicians about issues pertinent to immigrant victims of domestic violence.
DUTIES
• Represent immigrant victims of domestic violence in cases filed with federal administrative bodies and federal district and appellate courts.
• Represent immigrant victims of domestic violence in cases filed with federal administrative bodies and federal district and appellate courts.
• Screen immigrant victims of domestic violence at the Queens Family Justice Center for eligibility for immigration options and for representation.
• Supervise pro bono attorneys and legal interns representing immigrant victims of domestic violence in cases filed with federal administrative bodies and federal district and appellate courts.
• Implement project goals.
• Serve as immigration law resource for partner agencies at the Queens Family Justice Center.
• Represent Sanctuary for Families at the Queens Family Justice Center, community events, and on political and advocacy committees and task forces.
• Collaborate with district attorney’s offices, other government agencies, and community based organizations to improve systemic responses to battered immigrant women; educate and provide technical assistance concerning immigration issues affecting immigrant domestic violence victims.
• Contribute to Sanctuary’s efforts to educate the public, the law enforcement and social service communities and politicians about issues pertinent to immigrant battered women; develop written materials and curriculum for such purposes.
• Perform any other Department or agency-related duties or special projects as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
• Law degree
• 1-3 years immigration experience
• Admitted to practice law in a U.S. state or the District of Columbia.
• Expected to be admitted to practice law in New York State and federal courts as soon as practicable
• Excellent judgment
• Strong writing, research and analytical skills; strong communication and group leadership skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• Ability to work independently and under pressure
• Ability to work well with people of diverse educational, cultural and professional backgrounds.
• Bilingual English and Spanish highly preferred
